Approx Size: 57cm x 77cm (inc white border)About the artist, Martin Stainforth.Born in England, Stainforth arrived in Australia in 1909 and according to art historian S. Moore, [Stainforth] “painted all of Australia’s famous racehorses since Carbine.” Stainforth was one of the first artists to depict a horse galloping in the manner to which we have become accustomed today, rather than all four legs fully extended, as the 19th century (and earlier) artists did. He worked on a horse and cattle station in North Queensland for some years until his reputation as an equine artist enabled him to move to Sydney to paint horse portraits full-time. Apart from “Carbine” he became famous for his portraits of such horses as “Desert Gold”, “Poitrel”, “Eurythmic”, “Musket”, “Wallace”, etc and many of the VRC Flying Stakes of 1902- “Trafalgar” beating “Wallace” and the finish of the AJC Craven Plate 1918 etc. Ayling Arnold of the “London Sporting Life” saw some of his works when visiting Australia in the 1900’s and stated he had viewed many racehorse portraits but had never seen anything to match Stainforth’s. Stainforth not only exhibited in the National galleries of NSW and Victoria but also at the Royal Academy in Paris, Berlin and Brussels. “Waiting for the Master” ranks as one of his most appealing works and the title which he gave the painting says it all. It was painted about 1920 at the height of his prowess and the sheer quality of expression and understanding of his subject is perfectly obvious. He has been compared to the great artist Sir Edwin Landseer, who like him, told a story with his paintings and in his fine work this trait is wonderfully patent.
